The announcement that Jurgen Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the season has ignited the liveliest
Next manager’ betting market in years. Let’s look at the touted contenders, where the value lies, and why Stevie G won’t take over at Anfield.
- Xabi Alonso (4/5)
The ex-liverpool man has impressed at Real Sociedad and at his current club Bayer Leverkusen. A fluent English speaker, he is the fan’s choice and is likely to be offered the job. But the bookies have him as odds-on favourite, so there’s little value here.
- Roberto de Zerbi (8/1)
Has enjoyed success at Brighton since taking over from Graham Potter a season ago. Adapted to the Premier League and has his own unique tactical approach of baiting the opposing teams and hitting them on the counter-attack.. I see those tactics as being the reason why he won’t be the choice of Liverpool, whose fans expect a more dominant approach.
- Pepe Lijnders (10/1)
Current assistant manager at Liverpool, and highly rated by Klopp. Giving the assistant the top job worked well for Barcelona (Guardiola) and Madrid (Zidane) in recent years, and will be considered as the continuity candidate by the Liverpool board. His decent value makes him our dark hose choice, and we have some money on him as a speculative punt..
- Roberto Amorim (10/1)
The next Portuguese prodigy has been on the radar of Europes top clubs for a couple of seasons now, and it’s hard to see him staying at Sporting after thie summer. He doesn’t strike us as top 6 PL material yet, however, and the Liverpool job would one role away for Amorin.
- Steven Gerrard (25/1)
Ex-Liverpool icon has only impressed at Rangers, with poor spells at Aston Villa and how current Saudi club. Now seen as something of a joke in England, Stevie G has no chance of replacing Klopp. If you must play this, lay him on an exchange, if you can find anyone crazy enough to take the other side of the bet.
